People that make improvements in their businesses are action-takers. They don't procrastinate and they are quick to do things and get their hands dirty. People who stall out or plateau are procrastinators. In order to learn something, you have to apply it.

This is true for everything from school to work to hobbies. Just because you've put time into learning something doesn't mean you know it. In order to be good at something, you have to allow yourself to be bad at it first. This means being okay with making mistakes and being open to feedback.

Today, I get into the importance of learning vs doing. Enjoy!

  • How to make improvements and gain momentum
  • Getting feedback after workshops
  • Get out there and do it

Danny: So there's all kinds of hidden fees within your business that are just part of doing business. One of those is credit card. Processing and for us, we didn't even realize how much we were paying in credit card processing with the first management software we were using for our practice. And when we switched over to PT everywhere, we just realized we were saving literally hundreds of dollars a month with credit card processing with their partner with Card point versus who we were using with our prior.

Software. This has made a massive difference. It's more than paid for itself. It allows us to decrease our overhead. It allows us to have more cash flow to reinvest in our people, in our technology, in our facility, in marketing and everything that's gonna drive the business. So don't get abused by credit card processing companies.

Make sure you're paying what you should pay. And if you're looking for a management software, I highly recommend PT Everywhere directly integrates with a. Processor makes it very easy and their rates are super, super competitive. So it's saved us a ton of money and it probably will do the same for you if you don't know what you are getting charged.

So head over to PT everywhere. Take a look at what they've got. I think you really like it. So here's the question. How do physical therapists like us who don't wanna see 30 patients a day, who don't wanna work home health and have real student loans create a career and life for ourselves that we've always dreamed about?

This is the question, and this podcast is the answer. My name's Danny Matte, and welcome to the PT Entrepreneur Podcast.

What's going on guys? Doc Danny here with a PT Entrepreneur podcast, and today I'm gonna talk to you about how you can actually make some changes, gain some momentum this year, and not necessarily just hope that it happens. So here's something that I want you to keep in mind. People that make.

Improvements. People that gain traction in their business are action takers. People that stall out, they plateau or they delay, they're procrastinators and they don't necessarily think that they're procrastinators. And that might be talking to you specifically. So here's what I mean by that. I see two kinds of people.

I see people that are quick to action, quick to do things and get their hands dirty, get in there. They say, huh, workshops seem like something that could get new patients. And the next day they have a workshop set up. They just figure it out. They get in touch with a gym owner. They have a loose re relationship with or somebody they know, or they just show up at a gym and next thing you know, they literally have a workshop set up.

Now, on the flip side of that, I see people that are procrastinators but don't think that they're procrastinators and what they say is, workshops seem like that might be a good way to gain new patients. Okay. Let me google this. Let me see. How do you run a workshop? Let me see how many podcasts I can find on workshops.

Let me see if I can find any books that have to do with public speaking and setting up in-person events. And what they do is they spend the next two weeks devouring as much information as they possibly can on the topic of workshops and public speaking and local events. And then they don't do shit with it.

Nothing. They don't actually set anything up because they don't think they know enough still, even though they have consumed 10 hours of podcasts and read a whole book about a workshop, they haven't, they just don't feel comfortable because they think that they don't know enough yet. And this is a huge mistake.

I talk to people and they'll tell me, Oh my gosh, I've read a hundred books on business and I'll ask 'em. Oh, that's great, man. What kind of business do you have? Oh, I don't have one yet. I'm still I'm still getting the information that I need to be able to successfully start that business and.

In my mind, I'm like, what the hell are you talking about? You've literally put so much time into learning something, but you haven't applied anything that you literally don't know it. You can't learn something without applying it. Think of it this way, when you were in school, when you're in PT school, did you feel comfortable when you saw your first patient?

Did you feel like you knew what you were doing? You were gonna ace it? Oh my god. I got this person with shoulder problems that's had shoulder problems for a year. I, I'm still in school with my first patient. I'm gonna crush it. Probably didn't think you were gonna do all that well. In fact, all you were probably thinking about was all the special tests that you needed to do and all the sensitivity and specificity of all of those you could rule in or rule out whatever the damn diagnosis is, even though you were gonna treat it the same fucking way no matter what, whether it's impingement or something else, it's gonna be relatively the same, but no one knows that until they get pattern recognition and they get reps under their belt and confidence.

Until you start to talk to other human beings about why they have pain and why things hurt, and you're sitting there taking notes, thinking about sensitivity and specificity, and they're literally about to break down talking about how they can't lift their kid up out of a pool. That's the damn difference that I'm talking about, is you have to get into it, and you have to realize you're gonna suck at something.

No matter how much time and energy you put into it, you're gonna suck. You're gonna be bad. Everyone's bad at things when they first get started. And the only people that don't get better are the ones that don't allow themself to be bad at it, and don't. Come to terms with the fact that, you know what, I'm not gonna be great at this, and that's okay because everyone sucks at first.

So I'm just gonna set up my first workshop. I'm gonna try to be as prepared as I possibly can, but what I really am gonna do is I'm gonna do it after action review after this. And I'm gonna say brutally, all right, man, what went well? What didn't go well? Maybe I can have somebody that shows up, a friend, a coworker, a spouse, and they can tell me honestly, how'd that go?

Don't. Don't just tell me, oh my God, you did so great. Good job. No, I want to know. Okay. You said A hundred times you confused everybody on this topic. You rambled here. You gave too much time for this. And you didn't really wrap it up very well. I didn't really know what, the intent of what we're supposed to know by the end of this workshop was, so these are areas in which we can focus.

Okay, that hurts. If that was my friend and they just said all that to me, I'd be like, Ooh, dude, that hurts. But thank you because I needed that, because I'm trying to improve this. So now all of a sudden, You read this book on workshops like the, even the, I have a whole chapter on this in my book, and when you read that and you've never done a workshop, it's different than when you have done a workshop and then you read it and you're like, oh, that's what he meant about how we spread these out.

How we do this with a test, re test, and how much time we give for people to do exercises, and this is why I need to pitch myself at the end, and this is how you do it and this is what you say after that These are the things that you can apply once you have an understanding of what's going on. It's the same thing with patients.

With patients. We get in there and we're like, okay, I do this test and that means that they have this going on. But if you read these things and have practicals and all these other things, they're different than. That patient that comes in who could have wildly different answers.

It's not a straightforward case study usually. In fact, that's so rare. Normally it's also like they don't come in just with shoulder impingement. It's like they come up with shoulder impingement. Oh, and their neck hurts and they have a knee problem as well. And they'd like for you to check that out and you're like, okay, now I'm making a list.

And I'm totally confused. I just was remembering all the specificity and sensit sensitivity for shoulder tasks. Now I have to remember what they are for the neck and for. The knee and now I'm confused, and that's okay. Everybody sucks. Initially we all suck and we get better. So don't be the person that just learns and learns.

And then I talk to you a year from now and I'm like, how's that going? And you're great. I'm on Bick. I'm on book 102 of business. I'm basically a walk walking almanac for business knowledge of all sorts versus, dude, get out there. Go do something, actually do something that's going to drive people into your business.

Go meet somebody. Go teach something. Go network. Go. Go. Become a part of the niche that you want to actually work with. Get a patient in the door. Suck at selling. And then read more about selling and then test and iterate and improve cuz everybody's processes, everybody's flow, and everybody's unique approach is gonna be slightly different.

But you're not gonna know what that is until you test it. So you gotta get out there. And if you can do a mixture of both, that's even better. So if you can prepare yourself, but know that you're gonna suck and then improve yourself after the fact, that's even better. That's what we want. We want you to have enough knowledge to feel.

Comfortable, which you probably already have. But then we want you to take a hard look at what you're doing and how well it went and how can you improve it? You improve it through resources that you can read and things like this that you can hear, but you don't know what you need to improve if you don't get out there and actually do it.

So don't sit. In your office by yourself. Don't go home and just absorb nothing but content. Read all kinds of books. Listen to all kinds of podcasts. Stop listening to this shit. Don't listen to my fucking podcast anymore. Go out and do something. That's what you should do. That's it. Then come back and listen to what I have to say because you'll have so much more of an idea of how to apply that and what we're talking about in context for your content, you have to have context in order to understand how to apply.

The content, which is what this is, which is what books are, which is what audio books are, and YouTube videos and all the other stuff that you're just consuming, consume, and you feel productive because you're consuming all this stuff, but you're not applying anything and then going back and systematically improving what you're working on.

That's what I want you to do. Go out, do something you're gonna suck at, and I guarantee you, you'll feel better about it and your business will grow because of it.
